What negotiated instalment reductions involve, and why creditor agreement is essential.

Debt mediation is an informal negotiation with your creditors to make repayments affordable again, without entering formal debt review.

How a reduction is negotiated

We prepare an affordability picture based on your income and essential expenses and present revised repayment proposals to each creditor. Where creditors agree, combined instalments can sometimes be reduced substantially — often towards half of the original amount — usually with a longer repayment term.

Important considerations

  • Each creditor decides independently; agreement is never guaranteed.
  • Lower instalments over a longer term can increase total interest paid.
  • Interest and fees remain subject to the National Credit Act.
  • Keep every agreement in writing.
